HONEA PATH — A large crowd turned out Tuesday for the regular Honea Path Town Council meeting and the recognition of Terry Cooley for his 28 years of active service as a board member for the Honea Path Recreation Department.  His wife, Brenda, and daughter, Jennifer, were present for the recognition ceremony.

Mayor Lollis Meyers, Council member Sonny Davis presented Cooley with plaques commemorating his years of dedication and hard work with the recreation department. Council members serving on the Recreation Board of Directors are Sonny Davis, Fredda Gilmer and Bettye Mattison.

Cooley thanked Frankie and Scott Jones who worked with the recreation program for many years and Jason Rhodes and Tim Pace for the work that has made the recreation department what it is today. He reflected on the hard times experienced at the beginning of our town's recreation program as well as on the dedication of a new girl’s softball field last season behind the Watkins Community Center.

Town Council Meeting - June 9, 2008

Anderson County Councilwoman Cindy Wilson presented the town with checks for appropriation from last year for the Recreation Department - $6,500 and Honea Path Senior Citizens - $1,500.

Public Notice for the Town of Honea Path's Council Election date for council Wards 1, 3, and 5 to be November 4, 2008.   Council members presently holding these positions are Sonny Davis - Ward 1, Bettye Mattison - Ward 3, and Gary Branyon - Ward 5.

Richard Williams thanked the town for work that has been done in his neighborhood on abandoned houses and debris.  He also was concerned with the safety of the playground equipment that was brought from Dogwood Park to Bridwell Park.

Rusty Burns expressed thanks National Refrigeration for the refrigerator that was given to the Town Hall by their company.

Councilwoman Gilmer stated that she and Councilwoman Mattison agreed they would not be attending the annual municipal educational conference in Charleston this year due to the fact that taxes were raised and it would be more feasible if they not attend.

Fire Chief Jimmy Smith presented a Burning Ordinance for the second reading. Click here to see copy of Ordinance.

Councilwoman Mattison stated that repairs were needed in her area as well as new street signs.

Councilman Taylor has concerns from citizens about the need for a sidewalk on Saluda Street, concerns about Bridwell Park, and shortage of jobs in our area.

Councilman Branyon questioned the progress on the construction on Main Street.  The Mayor stated the contractors said that the concrete should be finished by June 11th.

Councilman Lark asked the water and sewer rates were from Ware Shoals were received as discussed in the last council meeting. He also expressed his concern of a report he had received of someone living in a camper behind Bagwell's Station on Main Street.

Councilman Davis stated that he would like to clarify that the $33,000.00 that was voted on June 9th, to be used to do work on Watkins Community Center did not have to be used.

The Town of Ware Shoals would like for the the Town of Honea Path to consider their payment to be reduced to $5,000. per month from $10,000. they are currently paying. Councilman Branyon made a motion to accept the offer.  No second was received.  Councilman Davis made a motion to negotiate for Ware Shoals to pay Honea Path $7,500 per month and $2,500 would go towards the backside of the $89,915.22 owed to them by the town.  Councilwoman Gilmer seconded the motion.  All voted in favor of the motion except Councilman Branyon.

Pamela A. Whitmire of Anderson has been awarded the 2008 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service by the South Carolina Pharmacy Association. She was presented the award by a Wyeth Pharmaceutical representative June 20 at the South Carolina Pharmacy Association Annual Meeting. Whitmire was also elected as the Speaker of the House of Delegates for the American Pharmacists Association.

Whitmire is the owner and operator of the Honea Path Family Pharmacy. She also serves as the Upstate Regional Delegate for the South Carolina Pharmacy Association and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Whitmire is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina Pharmacy program and Masters of Health Services program as well as the University of Florida’s Doctor of Pharmacy program.

Baking soda and used cooking oil could be the keys to lower gas costs


Mayor Lollis Meyers, who recently worked to secure a $5,000 grant for the town to turn old cooking oil into fuel for town government cars, also has arranged for installation of a hydrogen-generating device on one of the town’s police cars.
